Silk Shading, otherwise known as silk work and 'needle painting'. This is part of a bigger piece which will be finished in April 2009; the brief was simply to silk shade an animal of choice.

The technique uses single strands of stranded cotton in tiny needles, keeping many needles going at once - I think the most I had going in this piece was 11. The total number of colours in this piece is 21.

That is truly gorgeous. I couldn't even do that with paints let alone material. Wow.

Aww, thank you. :blushes: The funny thing is, I don't think I could do it with paint either... must try one day.

Wow. This is really wonderful work! The color blending is just gorgeous. Do you have a shot of the whole bird? I'd love to see it.

Hey fantastic, can't wait to see the final piece, looked really to complicated while you were embroidering. When do you start Yvaine?

This is absolutely amazing work :wow: gorgeous!

The technique is really impressive!

Thank you  I love silk shading, its a really fun technique to do because you can just relax into it and let it happen naturally, unlike goldwork etc.

Thanks  I'm actually stitching Tristran rather than Yvaine, but I'll be starting in January. Wouldn't it be lovely to stitch them both together :aww: maybe that'll be a future project...

I've just uploaded a full image. [link] Hope it lives up to your expectations! I actually took the first photo with the intention of using it as a business card in the future, so it doesn't show quite as much.

That sounds like fun! =D I may have to try.
